Theo Huff & The New Agenda Band

If Chicago is going to retain its long-cherished title as “Home of the Blues,” it will take more bookings like this to make it happen. Theo Huff has yet to reach his 30th birthday, but he’s already garnering an international reputation as a purveyor of the contemporary soul-blues (or “southern soul”) style. Huff’s influences – Tyrone Davis, Johnnie Taylor, the still-active Willie Clayton – are evident in his husky, pop/gospel baritone delivery, and he often fills his sets with standards made famous by these and other well-known figures. But he’s also developing a repertoire of his own (even if some of it, such as the leering “Wet Pannies” [sic], doesn’t necessarily do justice to either his talent or the suave, adult manner with which he comports himself both on stage and off), and he’s also beginning to “cross over,” as they say, into the so-called “mainstream” (i.e., white) market. He recently had a triumphant appearance at the Porretta Soul Festival in Porretta, Italy; an upcoming tour with harpmaster Sugar Blue should expand his reputation among this audience even more. But his music, as well as his stage show, remains solidly rooted in the African-American blues/deep soul/funk/soul-blues continuum; he’s a true torch-bearer, and for folks who’ve never seen a blues show in Memphis, Jackson, Atlanta, or Shreveport (or, for that matter, in a South or West Side show lounge right here at home), he should be a revelation.

Theo Huff: Theo began his career in musical theater productions, working with Ms. Jackie Taylor at the Black Ensemble Theatre, he received nominations for most promising actor and best featured actor in a play or musical for his role in “That Sensuous Seductive Seventies.” He continues to work with Black Ensemble Theatre even though he has a flourishing solo career. Theo recently graced the Black Ensemble stage in a production of a musical play about the life of blues great, Howling Wolf. Theo is a young artist with remarkable talent. His audience is always impressed with his stage presence and stellar performances. Wise beyond his years, he has learned well from the artists he admired. Receiving on-the-job training by performing on stage with many of the greats such as; KoKo Taylor, Bobby Rush, Harold Melvin and the Blue Note’s, Gene Chandler, Willie Clayton, Denise LaSalle, Albertina Walker, Garland Green, Darius Brooks and Millie Jackson. Learning from all the musical giants in the industry and combining many of their best attributes, Theo has developed a unique style of his own. His vocal abilities are phenomenal and his performances are sure to please even the most discriminating music critics. Theo Huff has bound his place in music and now understands that his new CD “Now Is The Time” is a mirrored reflection of his life in this present time. This new CD will take him to new horizons and give his fans hours of listening pleasure. Now is definitely the time for Theo Huff.
