"Rough and ready blues played with unmitigated intensity…Swirling, snarling, riveting slide….pound out riffs and rhythms like they’re overdosing on boogie juice. Scorching and soulful, joyous and stomping." –Living Blues

Tony Mangiullo

Tony Mangiullo was born in Milan, Italy, in 1958. He began his musical journey using detergent boxes, chairs, and kitchen utensils as makeshift instruments between the ages of 3 and 5. By his fifth birthday, he had already worn out his first toy drum set, a loss that was compensated when he received a proper drum set at the age of 14. His fascination with Chicago Blues took root during his formative years, leading him to contribute to the inception of the Mean Mistreaters Blues Band alongside Giancarlo Crea and Maurizio Simpsi in Milan, Italy. In 1978, after encountering Jr. Wells and Buddy Guy in Milan, Tony's destiny drew him to Chicago. The vibrant pulse of the blues coursed through the iconic South side lounges, particularly at the legendary Theresa's Lounge, where Tony discovered the authentic essence of the blues. It was here that he found himself playing alongside luminaries like John Primer, Sammy Lawhorn, and Ernest Johnson. As his journey continued, he joined forces with James Scott and Big Mojo Elem on the west side, and later had the privilege to collaborate with Homesick James and Big Walter Horton. His path ultimately intertwined with the Jimmy Rogers Blues Band, where he played alongside fellow musicians like Wild Child Butler, Hip Linkchain, and Sumito 'Ariyo' Ariyoshi. In a testament to his deep respect for the roots of the blues, Tony opened Rosa's Lounge in 1984. This homage to the cradles of blues tradition derived its name from Tony's mother, Rosa, who had joined him in Chicago, embodying the unwavering support that family brings. Tony Mangiullo's journey is a narrative woven with threads of passion, dedication, and an unyielding reverence for the blues heritage.
